Choosing the perfect wedding photographer for your big day can be as important as any other aspect of your special day. Photographs are seen as priceless items to many as they allow us to remember special occasions and old memories-especially in terms of our wedding day. When it comes to choosing the best wedding photographer to capture those special moments, there are many different factors which we must take into consideration such as the overall customer satisfaction they have received, the ideas for layout etc they have; and the overall cost of their time and the final images afterward. However for many, the deciding factor can be over the issue of copyright of our wedding pictures. This can differ depending on the photographer, but it is important to know that copyright is often owned by the photographer in question.
Copyright is used in order to legally protect various areas of creativity, including photography. A wedding photographer can use copyright protection in order to protect their images, layouts, aspects of design and any other factors which go into their final images. The copyright ownership of the images will provide them with exclusive, unlimited use of the images whether they choose to reproduce the images, display them as part of their portfolio or advertising of their services or even if they choose to sell them. They are also able to amend or edit the images in anyway they wish, regardless of the opinions of the subject in question. However, just because the photographer owns copyright of the images, does not mean that you as the customer do not have some rights of your own. In many cases, the photographer will provide you with a license for the images which means that you are able to use these for your own personal use, so long as you are not using them as a means to make some form of profit. This means you are able to safely make copies for friends and family and can even post them on the web, so long as your license agreement states that this is within your rights. However, it is important to be aware that some photographers may choose not to provide a license as this will mean that giving up the image files may cause them to lose some form of profit. In the case that you are provided with copies of your wedding pictures in a disc format for example, you will be charged a premium fee for this in most cases.
However, it is important to be aware that not every photographer will have copyright of your images. This means that you will be able to use your wedding pictures as you wish but with this, it usually means that the photographer in question will charge more for their services due to the lack of copyright ownership. In this instance, the client will often be provided with the images in a digital format as part of the service package and they are free to print as many of the images as they wish with unrestricted use.
If you are looking to hire a wedding photographer for your big day, ensure that you fully discuss the subject of copyright with them before agreeing to hire their services. By researching into the different policies each photographer has, you will not only be aware of your image rights after your special day; but will also be aware of the costs which come from unrestricted use of your wedding pictures.
